The Empire State Building, built in New York in the 1930s, used to be the tallest building in the world, at least until 1967, when the World Trade Center towers (the twin towers) were built. It was originally built to overtake the Chrysler building in a race to create the worlds tallest building. The man who ordered the Empire State Building to be built was John Jacob Raskob, the architects who designed it were Architects Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. The building, including the spire reaches the magnificent height of 1,472 feet.

This relates to engineering, because of the efficiency of its design, it is also structural engineering. The time the Empire State Building was created was a time when the arrival of new technological advancements called for taller and taller buildings to be created. This building managed to become the tallest building in the world for many years. While working on it, workers had to eat at food concessions placed every few floors since it took too long to climb all the way down and back up again. There were only a few deaths, about 6, while the building was being worked on.
