The war on drugs refers to government policies and initiative’s aimed at reducing the illegal drug trades. Lets look at the highlights to 1980 all the way up to 1997. (This is still an ongoing war and this article only covers the 1980’s and 1990’s.)
1980
Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act established mandatory sentences for drug offenses.
1986
The Anti Drug Abuse Act was passed, establishing harsher penalties for drug related crimes, including the creation of the ONDCP (Office of National Drug Control Policy).
1989
President George H.W Bush announced a $7.9 billion plan to combat drug trafficking and abuse.
1994
President Bill Clinton implemented the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which included provisions for increased funding for law enforcement and drug treatment programs.
1997
The Clinton administration launched the National Youth Anti Drug Media Campaign to educate people about the dangers of drug use.
These are just few significant events during the war on drugs in the 80s and 90s.
