 Introduction

Over the years, 3D printing has become more and more popular and some pretty cool things have been made with it. But, I bet you have never heard of or seen a 3D-printed hotel, well now there is one in Marfa, Texas. The resort is called El Cosmico and while it is still only in the design process, the pictures look cool.

Who is making El Cosmico?

ICON, Bjarke Ingles, and Liz Lambert have collaborated to architect El Cosmico. Bjarke Ingles said, “Liz Lambert’s legacy for reimagining hospitality and her pioneering of a contemporary Texan aesthetic combined with the minimalistic nature and culture, art, and landscape of Marfa has been the perfect fit to pursue a new architectural vernacular language for El Cosmico in Marfa.”

How will it be made?

It will all be made from the Vulcan Printer using the material Lavacrete. This new 3d-printing technology will take less time to make, produce less waste, and be stronger than regular buildings. The buildings in the resort will have organic curves and domes that can only be achieved by 3d-printing.

What does El Cosmico?

El Cosmico will be 62 acres and will feature a swimming pool, an open-air spa, an outdoor kitchen, and a communal space. Each unit will have a skylight in the curved roof allowing guests to look out into the beautiful night sky in Marfa, Texas. They will add the desert soil to the Lavacrete to make a cool color scheme to match the sandy surroundings.

Do Humans have to do any work?

The 3D printer does most of the work, but not all of it. Humans still have to do jobs like installing windows, and doors, as well as installing plumbing systems, electrical systems, and mechanical systems. Humans also still have to insulate the walls, lay rebar, and make foundations.
