The presence of something huge, overwhelming, or astonishing frequently triggers the complex emotion of awe. It is a feeling that can be created by taking in acts of bravery or charity, listening to uplifting music, or appreciating the beauty of the natural world.

Understanding the psychological, emotional, and physiological mechanisms behind the feeling of awe is the aim of the science of wonder. Researchers have investigated awe using surveys, laboratory experiments, and brain imaging.

You could experience awe when you see your favorite actor in person or when you reach a long-term goal.

Some of the key findings from the science of awe include:

  1. Awe can promote well-being: Research has shown that experiencing awe can increase positive emotions, such as happiness and curiosity, and reduce negative emotions, such as anxiety and depression. It can also lead to a sense of connectedness with others and with the world around us.
  2. Awe can alter our perceptions: When we experience awe, we may perceive time as slowing down, feel a sense of smallness in comparison to the vastness of the universe, or feel a sense of unity with others. These altered perceptions can have a profound impact on our thinking and behavior.
  3. Awe can have physiological effects: Research has shown that experiencing awe can lead to a decrease in levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as an increase in levels of the bonding hormone oxytocin. It may also lead to changes in heart rate and immune system function.
  4. Awe is a distinct emotion: While awe shares some characteristics with other emotions, such as admiration and wonder, research has shown that it is a distinct emotion with its unique properties.
