The manufacturing process of chain

Chains have been around for a long time. But how are these staples of heavy lifting and industrial machinery made?

The manufacturing process is started with metal rods or wire. The rods are cut mechanically into the lengths needed to make a link of chains. Then another machine bends them into loops, each one loosely connected to the previous. At this point it looks kind of like chain normally, but the loops are not connected. The next step in the process is to heat the metal to its melting point. The red-hot links are then pressed together and then cooled and they are fully attached. then excess material is trimmed from the connection point on each link. At this point, depending on what kind of chain it is, two different processes can take place.

Pretty Chain

If the chain is more decorative, such as the kind used to hang decorations outside shops or potted plants in your house, it is now bent into its decorative shape. The chain is then tested to 2 times its suggested weight limit to ensure it is strong. Finally, it is painted or giving a metallic finish and stored for shipping

Strong Chain

if the chain is intended for heavy duty use, such as securing things on construction sites, it will now go through a number of treatment processes to improve its strength. These processes include heat treatment (rapidly heating and cooling the metal to make it harder),  adding a zinc coating, and more. The chain is then ready to ship.
