In this article, I will cover what RAM is and which one you should buy for your computer.

What is RAM?

RAM, or random access memory, is a computer component used to store short term information. It is volatile, which means that if you stop giving it power, it will be deleted. It is faster than a hard drive, which stores information over a long period of time, and does not lose the data when turned off. RAM is used to store data that programs are using while they are running, like short term memory in a person. For example, if you are running a text editor, the RAM might store what font you are using, what color the text is, if the text is bold, what the text that has already been written is, ect. The computer would then copy the file you were editing to the hard drive when you save it. RAM is absolutely necessary in a computer and it can’t run without it.

What should I buy?

Before reading this section, you should know that most laptops come with a set amount of RAM out of the box. Even if you unscrew the laptop, you probably can’t replace or upgrade the RAM. There are two factors to consider when buying RAM: how much you need and the speed of the ram. For general computer usage, like web browsing and editing documents, you only need 4-6 GB of ram. If you are building a pc for heavy video editing, 3d rendering, or gaming, you will need much more, such as 16 GB. Keep in mind that there is no harm in having more except for cost. Another property of ram is the speed at which it can store and retrieve data. I won’t go in to much detail here, but different RAM has different data storage and retrieval speeds. Faster speeds are better, but some motherboards cant keep up with the fastest RAM and the RAM will slow down to match the motherboard. Therefore, make sure you don’t buy RAM that is faster than the fastest your motherboard can do. You would be wasting your money. The speed of the motherboard is listed in the specs on the box.
