Researchers at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering have developed a soft robotic arm that can sense motion, pressure, touch, and even temperature. Developers say that it was difficult putting the touch sensors into the device while trying to make a it a soft robot. In the end the researchers had to develop a organic ionic liquid-based conductive ink that can be 3D printed.
This relates to engineering because the engineers at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired have created a prosthetic arm that could help many people. Before the arm was made it would have had to go through the engineering process, and the engineers would have had to determine how exactly they would want to make the arm.
