How The Godfather Of A.I Quit
Learn about why the godfather of A.I quit
The Godfather of AI
Geoffrey Hinton has been working part time at Google and received his PHD in Artificial Intelligence 45 years ago.
So why would he quit after being such a successful worker, and what did he tell the New York Times?
Who Is Geoffrey Hinton?
Geoffrey Hinton is a renowned computer scientist and a pioneer in the field of deep learning. He was born in London, UK, in 1947, and currently works as a professor at the University of Toronto and a researcher at Google Brain. Hinton is best known for his contributions to the development of deep learning algorithms, which have revolutionized the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Turing Award in 2018, which is considered the Nobel Prize of computing.
Why Did He Quit?
Geoffrey was pioneer in artificial intelligence so why would he quit? Well Geoffrey was fearful of the development of AI and truly believed that it would become too advanced. He believed that in the hands of the wrong people, AI could be the death humanity. AI could give itself “sub-goals” like gaining more power or destroying more things and eventually would not need commands from humans.
What Does This Mean For Us?
Now does this mean that AI will take over the world? No, but it could present some dangers for the near future. Although he made it sound like we could never stop it, these dangers are completely stoppable and is not destined to destroy humanity. This is a near future problem, but there is no need to worry about it.
