The Sci-Fi hit Star Trek coined the famous phrase “Beam me up, Scotty”, but could we really be teleporting in the future? Well, teleportation is possible, just not the kind you may be thinking of. Teleportation is already possible in the quantum world. Rather than having a transfer of matter like traditional teleportation from science fiction, we see the transfer of information. Quantum teleportation involves two distant, entangled in which the state of a third particle instantly teleports its state to the other two particles.  Scientists confirmed that photons on computer chips could transfer information even if the photons were not physically linked.

So what does this mean for human teleportation? In theory we should be able to teleport as well. Each atom in our body is a particle with a set of information (type of atom, location, energy state and so on); if you were to move all the relevant information from one place to another, then you have teleported. Arrived without traveling. However, this is just speculation. If Star Trek has taught us anything, it is that teleportation is hard to do right and a lot of things can go wrong quickly.

Teleportation technology has progressed rapidly since 1993, and it is now being tested in the lab.
