In June 2019, the “Marsha” won the 3-d Printed Habitat Challenge. The challenge started in 2010 and encouraged the public to try and make a mars house that could be 3-d printed, durable, and airtight. The Marsha can be entirely 3-d printed except for certain things such as glass windows. The Marsha is made from a basalt composite which was a unique material. Volcanoes on mars that had erupted scattered basalt on the surface making the material a good choice. The Marsha was almost entirely made from a machine and protects from the radiation on mars’ surface. This relates to engineering because the Marsha had engineers try to find a way to 3-d print a house that was durable and had radiation protection.
