A new AI system has come out that can help people with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a disorder that affects the nerve cells of the brain, which causes seizures. Around 1% of Americans is impacted by epilepsy. Hisham Daoud and Magdy Bayoumi are behind this technology.
From the University of Louisiana, Daoud and Bayoumi developed an AI system that can catch seizures with a 99.6% accuracy and up to an hour before they occur. The system consists of a mix of electroencephalogram technology and predictive modelling. Others have made this kind of system, but this is the only one that combines both EEG technology and predictive modelling to predict seizures accurately and faster.
Although there are many benefits that come from this system, there is one minor setback. In order for the system to reach its highest potential, a person has to be trained on it. Even with this setback, there is no denying that this system can assist numerous amounts of people. The creators behind the system are developing a customized computer chip to process algorithms.
This relates to engineering because there was an issue that the creators found and they worked together to solve it. In response, they developed a system that is able to assist people with epilepsy. In engineering, you need to identify a problem and work together to find a solution.
