The Artemis and Apollo programs are both space programs meant to send humans to the moon. The Apollo program lasted 11 years starting in 1961 and ending in 1972. The Artemis program is the newer space program expected to last 6 years, the first launch was in November 2022 and the final launch is expected to be in 2028 as of writing this article. In this article, I will be comparing and contrasting the Artemis and Apollo program. I will be talking about these 2 categories.
- How much money was invested in each program
- Number of launches and purpose of the program
First, we will talk about how much money was invested in each of the programs. The US federal government invested $25.8 billion into the Apollo program and the Artemis program has cost the US around 93 billion dollars since 2017.
Now, we will talk about the number of launches and the purpose of each of the programs. The Apollo program had 17 total launches 11 manned and 6 unmanned. The purpose of the Apollo program was to establish the technology needed to meet other national interests in space by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), achieve dominance in space for the United States, carry out a program of scientific exploration of the Moon, and develop human capability to work in the lunar environment. The Artemis program is scheduled to have 4 launches 3 manned and 1 unmanned. The purpose of the Apollo program is to explore the Moon to make scientific discoveries, and technological advancements, and prepare for human missions to Mars. As well as testing NASA’s new Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion spacecraft.
