Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the eldest of three children; his father, Stephen Koenig Armstrong, was a state auditor, and his mother, Viola Louise Engel. Neil’s passion for flight and aviation was kindled when he took his first airplane ride at the age of 6. He joined the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable. He became a licensed pilot on his 16th birthday and a naval air cadet in 1947.
Neil Armstrong graduated from Purdue University. He began in 1947 and finished in 1955 because of the Korean War. He completed 78 combat missions in the Korean War. 1949-1952 Piloted the Gemini 8. Multiple technical failures happened during the mission, but Neil Armstrong and his copilot prevented it from being destroyed on 3/16/1966. Neil Armstrong landed on the moon on 7/20/69, saying the quote “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” He was the first person ever to step foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong served on the National Commission On Space, a presidential committee to create goals for a space program. It was very exclusive, and only the best were in it. He served from 1985-1986.
Neil Armstrong was very courageous throughout his life, serving in the Korean War and putting his life in danger during his many space missions. He was also very humble. He never asked to be the first one on the moon and never showed off because of it. Neil Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, because of complications from heart surgery.
