As technologies have advanced, we have found ways to make our everyday lives easier and easier. However, now that the newest technology has hit the scene (AI) we may have to wait and assess the risks before pushing the button.
Artificial Intelligence based, or self driving cars are an idea that has been toyed with again and again. And it could definitely be beneficial to our society. With car crashes being the leading death cause in America, it would be very impactful to get cars that removed human error from the equation. In fact, every year, there are 6 million car accidents occur, and 38,000 people lose their lives due to causes like speeding, drunk driving, and other reckless behaviors. In addition, self-driving cars would also allow drivers to lose a huge amount of the stress in traveling, and give them much more time to relax and get other things done. Also, without car crashes, we wouldn’t have any traffic jams due to accidents, or congested roads that are over-crowded.
While a lot of good can come from these autonomous cars, there is also a flip side. While these cars are designed to be perfect, there are always factors that cannot be accounted for. And, in the event of a catastrophic accident, the question is, who is to blame? The ‘driver’ has no control over the car, and so in the circumstance of such an event, there would be no real conclusion. We also have to worry about the environmental issues these cars could create. Advanced AI technologies already take an extreme amount of energy to function, so imagine how much CO2 and other greenhouse gasses we would be releasing into our atmosphere if we we had cars taking in thousands of factors, and communicating with one another. The effects on our climate would be quite extreme. Also, we shouldn’t forget the security risks associated with place the lives of millions of people into the hands of a technology. All it takes is one faulty line of code, or someone breaking into the system for there to be serious consequences.
In addition, many jobs are reliant on human-driven cars. Nearly 300,000 people in the United States are taxi drivers, and that doesn’t even include those who are bus drivers, chauffuers, and others. Autonomous vehicles could also end up including planes, boats, and helicopters, thus removing even more jobs from the future.
What is important to know about most new technologies is that while they can have side effects, they are mostly put in place to bring about change for the better. And while we might lose jobs from autonomous vehicles, plenty more will be created in the development of bringing Artificial Intelligence into the equation of vehicle construction.
