The IRIS-T Missile was developed by a German lead program in 2005. The IRIS-T has a passive weapon guidance system called Infrared Homing (Heat seeking) to hit its targets, the missile was designed to replace the Sidewinders used by many NATO member countries. It detonates on impact or can be calibrated to explode in a certain proximity to a target using active radar. It uses infrared light emission from a target to track and follow it.
