Drill Press Safety Rules
- Follow all general safety rules and operate only with instructors’ permission after you have received instruction.
- Measure accurately and mark the center of the hole to be drilled into the material.
- Select the correct size drill bit and be sure that is sharp.
- Hand tight the drill bit in the chuck and check for proper alignment by rotating the chuck by hand. Make sure the drill bit spinning in place, not wobbling.
- Tighten the drill bit in the chuck with the chuck key.
- Always remove the chuck key before using the machine.
- Adjust table to the correct height according to material thickness.
- Align the center mark on the material with the center of the drill bit before turning on the power.
- Hold material securely on the table with your left hand.
- Some materials may need to be clamped to the table. Long material must be clamped with the bulk of the material to your left.
- Turn power on and place your right hand on the feed wheel and apply slow even pressure while drilling into the material.
- If the material gets caught in the drill bit and starts to spin, turn off the power and stand back. DO NOT try to stop the material with your hands. Tell your teacher.
- When drilling metal, the speed should be adjust to slow. When drilling wood, the speed should be adjust to fast.
How to use a drill press while still following the safety rules
- Put your martial on to the wood that’s already in place
- then tighten the chuck key
- turn on
- lower the drill using the bar
- Then drill as much as you want into your material
- then slowly bring up
- stop drilling
- turn off then clean off the scraps
