Neuralink, a company that was founded by Elon Musk in June of 2016, created a small device known as the Neuralink brain chip. The Neuralink brain chip is placed into the area of the brain that controls the intent of moving. The goal of the brain chip is to help people with neurological conditions or spinal cord injuries and allow humans to control their devices just by thinking.
In 2021, the Neuralink brain chip made a major breakthrough, being successfully implanted into a monkey and displaying the monkey’s thoughts on a screen. This proved that the brain chip could function on a living being.
In May of 2023, Neuralink was able to make another breakthrough, getting clearance from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for human clinical trials. Neuralink started recruiting people with spinal injuries to be part of the trials and thousands of people volunteered. On January 21, 2024, Elon Musk announced on the social media platform, X, that the first human trial for the Neuralink brain chip was completed, with the first brain chip being implanted into a human. According to Elon Musk, the first human to get a brain chip implant is “recovering well”. Elon Musk also stated that the results of the brain chip show “promising neuron spike detection”. Neuron spikes allow neurons to transmit signals from the brain to the body. So far, information about the human trial is slowly being revealed and the results of the trial are expected to come out soon.
