Look at what Amazon is today, a massive franchise that delivers packages across the world. Well, it wasn’t always like that. Believe it or not, it started as a small bookstore in Seattle.
Amazon was opened in 1995. It started as a small garage-based online bookstore, in Seattle. Jeff Bezos realized the potential for online shopping, so he created a store there. After thinking through a variety of products to sell, Bezos decided on books. He thought that selling books online would have an advantage in the online market because you don’t need to print out massive catalogs. As Bezos’s business started to rise in popularity, many news channels spoke badly of it. They thought that it would lose all of it’s popularity it managed to gain, and would go bankrupt. But despite what many said, Amazon managed to thrive.
Despite how the company’s sales were going up rapidly, the company wasn’t making much money. This was because Bezos was selling his products for as little as he could, to keep the customers happy. Many Wall Street analysts discouraged Bezos’s business because of his tactics. Even though some looked down on Bezos, he continued to thrive. He created many of the standards of online shipping, which we still use today.
In 1998, Amazon started to sell more than just books. They started to sell music and movies, which were a big hit. Soon after, in 2005, they launched Amazon Prime. This gave free 2-day shipping in the lower 48 states, as long as you paid a small monthly fee. This was also the time that Bezos made a pivotal decision. He decided to widen Amazon so other people could sell products on Amazon. That changed Amazon from a simple online store into a selling platform.
In 2007, Amazon widened its focus. They started to sell the Kindle, which is a device that has hundreds of online books on it. They also created Amazon music, as well as prime video. In 2014, Amazon launched Amazon Echo, and Alexa, the first voice assistants out there.
Amazon is probably the most successful electronic business out there. They dominated the industry in basically everything and are still expanding. They created many standards that many companies still use today. Even though they had small beginnings, they survived many challenges and created an empire.
