Mistakes are a common occurance many of us face everyday. Whether it be failing to do something small, like waking up on time, or something big, like crashing your car. People who are successful and seem like they excel still make mistakes like this, so what differentiates us from them? Those people learn to get past their mistakes and learn from them. How do these people do that?
How to get past mistakes
Although many of us associate mistakes with a learning opportunity, it can be difficult for some to really learn from their mistakes. There are many things in the way of us being able to easily learn from our mistakes like, how confusing, discouraging, or painful some can be. After making mistakes, most people tend to show less participation in the activity taking place, or less self confidence. That’s because mistakes are tempting to just label a issue and take it as a temporary setback. However, studies show that when discouraged, the brain takes in less or no new information being given. This can be a big obstacle in learning, and will only hold you back. Mistakes and getting over them are heavily based on perspective.
Perspective
Many people deal with mistakes differently based on their relationship with the matter. For example, studies have shown that people beginning in learning something new prefer nicer teachers that give praise. While more experienced learners prefer teachers that give criticism and feedback. Some speculate that this is due to new beginners feeling more prone to discouragement from mistakes and want a nicer environment to decide if they want to continue learning the subject. Experienced learners most likely prefer criticising teachers because they are more used to mistakes and know how to learn more from them.
