How Computer Adaptive Tests Work

How assessments have been improved with the help of technology

Assessments have come a long way from paper pencil tests, to electronical tests, and now to computerized adaptive test (CAT).  CAT tests are constantly used for common tests in schools, businesses, and even in medical fields.  These tests include the SOL, GRE, and the GMAT tests.  All of these tests are computerized adaptive tests which means that they get progressively harder or easier depending on how many answers are correctly answered.

Computerized adaptive tests are tests that adapts to the test-taker’s performance in real time.  The process that the computer runs is used to determine how difficult a test question should be.  For example, if a test-taker answers a question correctly, the compute recognizes this and re-evaluates your ability and then shows a new question that will be slightly more difficult than the previous question.  This same re-evaluation processes is also used when a test-taker answers a question incorrectly.  However, instead of showing a more difficult question, the test shows a slightly easier problem due to the test-taker incorrect response.

Computerized adaptive tests provide the starting question of medium difficulty.  Then after the question the computer re-estimates their ability and provides the next question depending on whether the test-takers answer was right or wrong.  The computer is constantly re-evaluating and re-estimating the test taker’s ability to answer the questions correctly.  Thus the test, is a personalized test for everyone to have an assessment on par with their knowledge.  With computerized adaptive tests, businesses and schools are able to asses someone’s knowledge and put people in a class on par with their knowledge.    These tests can accurately measure someone’s knowledge on a subject just from answering a series of questions.  This will improve efficiency in learning when the put into the correct class.
