How your memory works

Memory works by making a memory, storing it, and then recalling/remembering a memory.

First, making a memory. You can make a memory in one of four ways. the first is visual, (how something looks) the second, sound (how something sounds) third, semantic (what something means) and fourth, tactile (how something feels. The form of the memory may be different than the original.

Second, storing a memory. Storage is the how, where, how much, and how long. There are two types of storing a memory: short term memory and long term memory. Memories are first stored in short term memory and then stored in long-term memory. Short term memory lasts between 15 and 30 seconds and stores 5-7 nuggets of information however long term memory lasts indefinitely and can store infinite nuggets of info.

Third, recalling the memory. Recalling a memory is different depending if the memory was stored in short-term memory or long-term memory. if it was stored in short-term memory then it is received in an order, like a list of numbers or items. if it was stored in long term memory then it will be recalled at a time or place like where you left your jacket in a classroom when you enter the door to that room you remember that you left your jacket in that room.
