How Jet Skis Work
Explaining how a jet ski works.
Everyone loves to ride on jet skis, but do you know how they work? Believe it or not, jet skis are pretty simple. But first, what is a jet ski? A jet ski is a small watercraft that people can sit on top of like a motorcycle. They are some of the fastest yet easy to use machines that you can use on water.
How Do They Work?
Basically, the jet ski pulls water in and pushes it out the back and you move. It is similar to swimming where you paddle and push water behind you to move forward. Water gets into the engine by an impeller which is a machine that pulls water into the jet ski. Once the water is in the jet ski the impeller (which is connected to the engine) shoots it back out. The thrust of the water getting pushed out, pushes the jet ski forward. This system is used because of three reasons. The first, being a reduced risk of injury when you fall over because there are no external moving parts. The second reason is it works in shallow water. The third reason is reduced risk of mechanical failure.
Jet Ski Facts
Jet skis were created by Clayton Jacobson II, a dirt-biker who didn’t want to fall anymore and decided to make a motorcycle for the water. A jet ski can get up to speeds of 40mph to 70mph and jet ski motors have about 150 horsepower. Jet skis can hold around 350-600 pounds.
