How Jelly Beans Are Made
In this article, you will learn how jellybeans are made, what they are made of, and some history of how they were invented
What Are They Made Of?
Despite its name, jelly beans are not beans and don’t taste like jelly. Jelly beans are mostly made of corn syrup and sugar, thickened with cornstarch. Jelly beans also have ingredients like beeswax, confectioners glaze, and carnauba wax to give them their unique texture and consistency.
When Were They Invented?
It is a mystery when jelly beans were invented. They are thought to have originated from Turkish Delight, also known as lokum. Turkish Delight is a middle eastern jelly candy that is covered in powdered sugar or cornstarch. Turkish Delight’s chewy texture is thought to be the inspiration for jelly beans filling. The shell of jelly beans is derived from Jordan almonds, which are sugar coated almonds. The almonds are sugar coated by shaking them in a container af syrup.
How Are They Made?
First, manufacturers heat liquid sugar to around 350 degrees fahrenheit and mix in starch and glucose. The mixture is then poured into starch molds that are shaped like beans. It is then dried for a day to give jelly beans their chewy texture. Once the beans are removed from the mold, the beans are steamed and coated with more liquid sugar. After that, the beans are put in a spinning machine. The beans are spun as artificial flavours and colors are added to the beans to give them their flavour and coloring. Towards the end of the process, grains of sugar are added to the spinning machine around 4 times. The granular sugar gives jelly beans their hard, outer shell. Finally, wax and hot syrup are added to the spinning machine at the end. Once the beans are done, they are dried and packaged.
