Imagine yourself walking outside on a nice day, the sky is a nice blue.  You don’t know what it is but your friend tells you that your on a salt flat.

What is a Salt Flat?

A Salt Flat is a big and flat expanse of land due to evaporation from a body of water or groundwater. Vast expanses of mineral and salt were left behind due to that.  They are usually found in arid and desert places were bodys of water previously existed. The bodies of water are usually seas or lakes that have dried up millenniums ago. They’re usually made up of salt and other minerals.

Salt Flats around the world

  • Salar de Uyuni. The largest salt flat in the world. It’s located in Bolivia and is measured to be 4,086 sq miles (12,018 ft).  It is the most popular tourist destination in Bolivia and let me tell you, you can get some amazing picture while your over there.
  • Bonneville Salt Flat. It is located in Utah, in the USA. Measured to be around 30,000 acres, or a 12 by 5 mile expanse of land, it is big.  It is only 11o miles west to Salt Lake City, the capital and the most popular city in Utah.
  • Makgadikgadi Pan. It is located in North-eastern Botswana in the dry savanna. Its measured to be around 30,000 km squared. The sights are amazing there, especially at sunset. You can also found animals there too.
