Chippy: The World's First Robotic Tortilla Chip Maker

By: Yash Kini, Journalist

Chipotle recently revealed its new robotic tortilla chip maker, named “Chippy”. This robot will recreate Chipotle’s actual tortilla chip recipe, using corn masa flour, water, and sunflower oil. This autonomous kitchen assistant will be incredibly helpful, as Chipotle-branded tortilla chips are immensely popular. To fabricate this robot, Chipotle partnered with Miso Robotics, which also created Flippy, a robot that grills burgers, to customize and construct Chippy.

Chippy was first tested in the Chipotle Cultivate Center, in Irvine, California. This cultivate center is the main hub for Chipotle technology, often having new inventions being tested there. This invention will be useful, as Chipotle has a rough time cooking chips in peak times. According to current workers at Chipotle, this robot will not completely remove jobs, but instead to make them more efficient and quick. This robot was also made to reduce the workers’ tasks, and have them devote their complete focus to their assigned jobs.

After Chipotle tested its robot, their shares immediately skyrocketed. As soon as the robot will become mass produced, Chipotle will slowly go towards an automated future, with dishwashing robots and maybe even cashier robots. AI will slowly dominate the food industry, as it will do for most jobs in the future. This is why non-automated industries are slowly losing stock, forcing them to adapt to the way of the future. Many workers will be laid off, and the company will run by itself. All we know now, is that this invention is the start of a robotic future for Chipotle.
