RV’s are typically known to be slow to medium-paced vehicles, but not this 1977 GMC. It has a 700-horsepower engine that can travel 122 miles per hour! For such a heavy vehicle or house, that is extremely impressive.
This 1977 GMC RVs owner, Britt Palmer, decided that he wanted to make the fastest motorhome speed record. So the vehicle was taken to a man named Dennis McCarthy, who happens to be a custom car maker who has created lots of vehicles from the Fast & Furious series. According to interestingengineering.com, “The inside was stripped of every cupboard, appliance, and faux-wood decoration and covered in aluminum sheeting. Fire Suppression, a 360-degree video camera mirror system, and a 20-gallon fuel cell were added.” They really completely reset the thing.
Palmer and McCarthy decided to make the beast modern and added components other than the TH425 automatic transmission, which makes it a 700-horsepower Chevy Ram Jet 502 engine. Overall, the changes were successful to break the motorhome speed record. The GMC even reached speeds up to 122 miles per hour, breaking the previous record of 102.7! Even though it doesn’t beat the speed of the smaller, more compact RVs, it does beat the speed of other RVs its size. If you’re wondering how fast those ones go, the one that currently holds the record goes 141 miles per hour. People say this RV has been seen on Facebook Marketplace, listed at $95, 000, which for the work that was done on the behemoth, I think is a reasonable price.
