Singapore has been using around 430 million gallons of water per day. That could double in the next decade.

Singapore is a home to over 5 million people and many various attractions that include water. Such as the tallest waterfall in the world, Rain Vortex, this baby pumps over 10,000 gallons of water per minute. But it has absolutely no natural water sources providing it. Singapore relies on bordering countries to keep it running.

The Solution

In short answer Singapore is collecting rain water and recycling it. To further explain they are first, heavier solids in the collected wastewater settle in a process called primary sedimentation. These solids are then removed from the water. Second, the water is gone through a process called activated sludge. In this stage, air is pumped into the wastewater so micro-organisms can digest the organic matter. Third, pressure-driven membrane filtration removes all solid material. Finally, in the fourth stage, ultra-violet radiation removes any remaining bacterias. Singapore uses this process everyday and it makes up of about 40% of its water. All of this is made by a company called NEWater. They are making water cheaper and faster. It will cost roughly $125 million dollars to build a new building for it but once they do. It is projected that Singapore’s water supply will stay level until 2060.
