The transfer portal has been around for a long time but just in the past couple months it has become very popular since the 2021 season ended. The transfer portal is open for anyone is division 1 basketball who would like change teams if there are unhappy where they are at. The reason the portal has become so prevalent in the past year is because of the new rule. Before the rule you had to sit out 1 year if you transferring teams. Since COVID-19 hit the NCAA they have now made it that you can leave the team without being able to sit out any amount to time. That has caused some controversy because many people think it is unfair to the team you are leaving because they get no consequence for leaving anymore. It was believed that this new transfer rule would only be in place for one year. Now that the transfer portal has become so popular the NCAA has decided to make it a permanent rule. Most of the people that transfer usually leave because of the either they aren’t getting the playing time they want or their team isn’t winning enough. Some times the coaches that recruited the player will get fired and they don’t like the new coach so they would leave.
