Located in Greece, the Rio-Antirrio is an earthquake proof bridge built using engineering. During earthquakes, cars could cross to the other side to get to safety. It’s very stable, and was built in 2004. The Rio-Antirrio bridge’s official name is actually Charilaos Trikoupis bridge, named after a 19th-century Greek prime minister.

Charilaos Trikoupis was the one who wanted to build a bridge between Rio and Antirrio. He couldn’t build it at the time, due to the project being too expensive.

The Rio-Antirrio bridge is the longest cable-stay bridge in the world. It is almost 3 kilometers long and a width of 27 meters. Its four towers that stabilize it go 65 meters deep water, and can withstand earthquakes at 7.4 on the richter scale. It was designed to absorb the energy created by earthquakes and tsunamis.
