Have you ever heard of Matt Prater? Well, if you haven’t he plays for the Detroit Lions and he has the record for the longest field goal which was 64 yards. Can you believe that? This fantastic engineer, Mark Rober, decided that he wanted to end Matt Prater’s ruling of longest field goal. He spent a little over a year building a machine that could kick further field goals than Matt Prater. After many test and fails, Mark finally decided to up the spring force of the machine to 2 tons and added in a stronger quick release. Then, he changed the pole that made contact with the ball to represent a foot so it would kick straight. After all those enhancements, he was able to make a machine that could kick up to 105 yard field goals but after a couple of kicks the axle would snap because of the force they were using. Mark decided to swap in a stronger axle, and they measured an average person’s foot so they would know exactly where the machine would connect with the ball. After these changes, the machine worked perfectly and was able to kick field goals way farther than any human.
