Many people think that dogs can only see in black and white. That is not true. Dogs can see shades of blue, yellow, and green. When these shades of colors are combined, dogs can see shades of grayish brown, dark yellow, light yellow, grayish yellow, dark blue, and light blue.
The ability to see color comes from special cells in our retinas called photoreceptor cells, also known as cones. When stimulated, these cells allow us to perceive light as colors. Humans have three cones, red, green, and blue, but dogs only have two. Blue and a pigment that falls between humans green and red.
This relates to engineering because dogs can perceive light based on the engineering of their eyes and retinas. The more we know about the engineering of the eye, the more we can know about how dogs see color.
