On October 24, China opened a huge six-lane mega-bridge connecting the mainland city of Zhuhai to Hong Kong and Macau with over 34 miles of elevated roadway. The Pearl River Delta supports a gargantuan economy, and is one of the worlds largest mega city. With the waterway already serving as an economic artery between mainland China, Hong Kong and other former colonial enclaves, the bridge is another step toward connecting the country’s “Greater Bay Area,” which is already home to 67 million people. Drivers will need a permit to drive on this bridge and officials hope to gain money to refund what they spent on the bridge.
This is related to engineering because the bridge was made out of anough steel to build 60 Eiffel Towers and enough concrete to construct 22 Chrysler buildings.
