There are many games that have been turned into a TV series, and have had great success from them. There is not an exact formula for success in an adaption from a game, but there are things that you might notice in my examples listed below.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners is an anime released by Netflix in 2022, and it is based off the game Cyberpunk 2077 which was released a couple years prior. You might recall Cyberpunk 2077 as that one game that was super hyped up by everyone back in 2020 just for it to be buggy and near unplayable on release. That’s where Edgerunners comes in, as it was a massive success, with its heart wrenching story, its amazing display and atmosphere of night city, and most of all, its showcase of what is capable in the game with the cybernetic enhancements. Because of how good it was, many people decided to come back to the game and realized how much it has improved with all the bug patches and playability. Now many people recognize Cyberpunk 2077 as an amazing game, and I believe that is mostly because of Edgerunners.
Arcane is a Netflix animated series known for its stunning animation and extremely well written story, but you might be surprised by its origins. It was based of the popular online game, League of Legends. You might be surprised by how this seemingly basic game could be transformed into an amazing show, and here’s how. The creators of the show decided that the game is a little too boring on its own, so they decided to add depth to the characters, for example, Jinx in the game is a mindless killer, while Jinx in the show has reason to do what she does, and has mental battles with her past for the viewers to sympathize with her. They also used locations from LoL to build the story, and for old LoL players to recognize. These little changes might bring arcane watchers and old fans of LoL to the game.
