This special type of watermelon, as with many others on this list is only grown on the island of Hokkaido, Japan with the town of Toyoma as their epicenter. It’s unique density and taste due to the rich volcanic soil make it highly sought after. It was originally introduced to the island in 1981 as a break from tradition. The name “Densuke” was trademarked in 1989, and only watermelon meeting rigorous standards can attain this status. They are also polished to a black sheen after being harvested. It’s important to note that the average price of this is very high.
2. Miyazaki Mangos $50-$4824
Grown on the island of Kyushu, Japan, these expensive fruits come in a very uniform red and a variety of shapes and renowned for their sweetness. They are grown in a relatively modern style, as mango farming is new to Japan (mid 1980’s). In order to be considered Miyazaki mangos, the fruit must meet rigorous standards, such as 15% sugar content and a minimum weight of 350 grams.
3. Square melons $100-$500+
These uniquely shaped fruits come from the Zen Suji Kagawa prefecture, Japan. Their origin is in the mid 1970’s, but the creation is no accident. Farmers put the young watermelon into a square shape container to mold the shape into a cube with rounded edges. the watermelon is unripe when sold, however. These are mostly purchased for novelty.
4. White Jewel Strawberry $10 per berry
Despite the unripe appearance of these berries, the whiter or paler they are, the riper and sweeter the berries taste. They are remarkably sweeter and larger than their red counterparts, but the aspect that sets them apart is the fragrance. They exude a gentle scent similar to peaches or pears. Japan’s most renowned strawberries hail from Saga prefecture.
5. Yubari king melon $50-$37000
These fruits come from Hokkaido, Japan, specifically the town of Yubari. The melons are nurtured with unparalleled care and precision. Dedicated attendants tend to the fruit, giving them daily inspections and cleanings. Any melon that doesn’t develop the coveted wiring on the sides won’t make the cut.
