The Axolotl (Ambystoma Mexicanum) is a type of paedomorphic salamander naturally found in the lake of Xoclimilco in Mexico City. Axolotls are one of the only animals that can completely regenerate almost all of their body from severe injuries, making them eye-catching for tourists who want them like exotic pets.
Why are they in danger of extinction?
Not all Axolotls are in danger, but only the wild Axolotls are threatened with extinction. Researchers have found that between 50 and 1,000 Axolotls live in the wild worldwide. This is due to pollution in their area and the introduction of invasive species, which is causing the number of Axolotls in the wild to decrease drastically.
