Okay, so back in January, SpaceX‘s Starship totally blew up and debris fell all over the Caribbean. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was like, “Hold up, whoa!” and put the rocket program on hold for a bit to figure out what happened. They‘ve been pretty tough on SpaceX, the biggest space company out there, a few times already.
The FAA‘s highest ranking lawyer said last September, after they attempted to fine SpaceX $633,000 for messing up two prior launches, “Safety‘s our number one thing here. If a company doesn‘t follow the safety rules, they‘re gonna get in trouble.”
SpaceX’s Elon Musk, the individual who leads SpaceX, became very angry, very fast. He complained about the FAA being unfair and bullying them with “lawfare,” and he even threatened to sue them for being too controlling. On X, he put, “The real problem is that people won‘t ever leave Earth unless the FAA changes big time!”
Now that Musk is in a position to ruffle some feathers, he‘s buddies with President Donald Trump and is the boss of this new organization known as the Department of Government Efficiency, where they‘re trying to cut costs and reduce regulations.
No one has any idea what Musk‘s crew is planning to do to the FAA, but staff there (or used to be there) are kinda freaking out. They think that Musk is planning to attack this small branch of the FAA which deals with his rocket company, the Office of Commercial Space Transportation, or the AST for short. One staffer who used to work there, who did not want his name used when referring to Musk, just stated, “Everyone‘s pretty nervous.”.
