Recently, a company known as Colossal Biosciences has been intent on reviving extinct species like the Dodo and Tasmanian Tiger. It reached a breakthrough when it announced that it had used a technology known as CRISPR to input mammoth genes into mice on March 4 of this year. Colossal aims to revive species to solve the loss of many due to global warming and other reasons. To do this it has aimed to first de-extinct the woolly mammoth using DNA that was found in a mammoth that was frozen in ice, preserving its genes. To do this, they used CRISPR(or Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), a system that snips off and adds bits of specific DNA to cells. This can be used to alter DNA and was the process that made these mice a reality. The company aims to eventually use its technology to alter Asian elephant’s DNA and achieve a true mammoth. Although resurrecting the mammoth still seems far off, it may prove invaluable in the battle against extinction.
