Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) Plans to build a commercial fusion reactor in Chesterfield County, VA. The plant is supposed to begin construction around 2030. The fusion plant will be connected to the grid and generate 400 Megawatts. The reactor itself is a Tomak Fusion Reactor. These work by trapping and heating plasma to facilitate nuclear fusion. The project has gotten a lot of support from the local government and Dominion Energy. Governor Youngkin has spoken very optimistically about the fusion reactor in Chesterfield, which is just south of Richmond. Now, the placement of the reactor may seem a little bit odd at first, but the reactor is going to help power the data center ally, where 1/3 of the entire world’s Internet runs through.
There are many differences between a regular fission reactor and a fusion reactor such as, fusion reactors fuse atoms, creating lots of energy, and they produce low-level radioactive waste that doesn’t last very long while nuclear reactors also produce lots of energy, but they produce very radioactive waste that lasts a very long time. CFS’s fusion reactor project, will bring lots of energy to the Virginian power grid.
