Australia has recently created history with a wonderful device. They implanted a truly fabulous artificial heart called the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart in a man as part of a six-hour procedure in November. He was the first person in the whole world to take him home, and he lived on this new–generation heart for over 100 days before he got a regular heart from a donor. This was at St Vincent‘s Hospital in Sydney, where the heart specialist named Dr. Paul Jansz conducted the surgery. The BiVACOR heart is made of titanium and served as a standby until a real heart became available. But this is where it gets interesting doctors feel that it could even be a permanent option for people whose hearts are not working properly! Dr. Jansz conceded he was rather nervous when Daniel Timms, the inventor of it, turned it on. He called it “the Holy Grail“ because it‘s that good—it can‘t be broken down or rejected by the body. It possesses a rotating element that floats on magnets to circulate blood. Since it doesn‘t rub on anything, it does not get worn out quickly and can last very long. Besides that, it‘s capable of keeping blood
flowing smoothly and well, inhibiting clots to form and preventing the heart from deteriorating. This great invention was made by an Australian man named Daniel Timms, who‘s a biomedical engineer—that is, someone who constructs things to make bodies work better. He was attracted to this because he would play around with water pumps when he was young to help his father, a plumber. They‘d even try to buy tons of stuff from a store called Bunnings to create things, like a challenge game trying to figure out how long a receipt was! Daniel said playing around with pumps and machinery as a child assisted him in figuring out how to devise the BiVACOR. Sadly, his father passed away due to heart failure, which motivated Daniel even further to finish this heart and help those in need.
