We have inalienable rights that can never be taken away. Animals also have rights, moral rights. This refers to the idea that “many animals have fundamental rights to be treated with respect as individuals—rights to life, liberty, and freedom from torture (Wikipedia, paragraph 2)” Organizations also have rights, this includes the right to sign contracts and the rights to own property. One of the popularly discussed topics is whether robots should also have rights.
If we give robots rights, it could interfere with our rights, one example of this is the right to a safe workplace. Some robots handle difficult and dangerous tasks that we can’t do, disabling bombs for example. If we were to give robots the same rights as humans, it’d be unethical for them to go to places that could potentially harm and kill them. Robots would then be given more rights than a police dog, as the dog still goes into danger. Furthermore, robots can perform simple tasks that we too can do, but robots have a higher attention span, it would be more efficient. Because of this, the have an advantage, if we gave them rights, they would have an even greater advantage.
On the other hand, robots and humans work alongside each other more frequently, as this goes on, we will begin to think of them as co-workers. The robots might develop the desire to be treated as an equal. As technology advances, so do robots. A human-like robot called Ameca can show emotional expressions, making it easier for us to relate to it. As Ameca continues to approve, it becomes more human-like, why shouldn’t it deserve rights? Lastly, people believe that robots deserve rights. They contribute to our society in more ways than one, they make it better and easier for us to live. We treat animals with respect, why shouldn’t we do the same for robots?
Many people argue that robots should be given rights, and others argue that robots shouldn’t be given rights. After reading this article, do you think robots should be given rights?
