Many of the games we play today are free-to-play, examples include: Fortnite, Brawlstars, and Clash of Clans. But have you ever wondered how these games make money? In this article, we will be talking about the 3 different methods that free-to-play games use to make money.
Micro-transactions
The first way that free games make money is by using micro-transactions. These are things the player can buy for cash. These could be in-game currencies or accessories your character could wear. While you might not want to buy these at the start as you continue to play the game and it becomes harder to progress through, you might want to pay money to progress faster.
Advertisements
Many free-to-play games have advertisements in them. These can be ads that you are forced to watch in order to play the game or can be ads that you choose to watch in order to a reward. When games display ads they get money. Some games also let you not have to watch ads if you pay cash.
Passes and Limited-Time Events
Many games that are free-to-play have season passes that can be bought for in-game or actual money. Some games also have limited-time events, that offer exclusive skins or items. These limited-time events create a sense of urgency and sometimes lead to players spending money to unlock items faster.
