China’s new CR450 train has become the world’s fastest train, capable of speeds higher than 280 miles per hour. The CR450 contains an advanced permanent magnet traction water-cooled system and has an upgraded bogie design for stability, which is necessary considering the high speeds this train can reach. The sub-prototypes of the CR450 include the CR450AF and CR450BF, with both including an eight-car formation, and a mixture of powered and non-powered carriages. This may be to prevent any accidents from having all the carriages moving at a very high speed simultaneously. All the prototypes have passed low-speed dynamic tests, as well as static, braking, and noise control tests.
China is currently the only country controlling and operating this kind of commercial high-speed rail, as they faced fierce global competition from France and Spain but never lost the title of operating the world’s fastest train. To put the speed in perspective, a normal train speed ranges from around 50 – 75 miles per hour. For a regular bullet train, 200 miles per hour is the average. Now, if you added the speed of a regular car on a local road twice, it would barely reach the speed of the 280mph train, which shows just how fast it really is.
