Meta has announced plans to build a 31,000 mile subsea cable that will connect five continents. It is called Project Waterworth and it will be the longest underwater cable being longer than the circumference of the Earth. It will connect the U.S, Brazil, South Africa, India, and Australia with very good connectivity. It will take multiple years and billions of dollars to make.
Meta is expanding its focus to more than social media and AI. According to Meta, the owner of Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram it will be the longest cable with a 24 fibre-pair system which will give it a higher capacity. Subsea cables are becoming more and more important because they are used to transfer data quickly and more. More than 95% of the world’s web traffic is sent through subsea cables. It will help multiple countries in advancing AI technology and technological advancements.
Subsea cables are very vulnerable to accidents and attacks. They can easily be broken or severed. This is why this subsea cable is so important to connect the world. Meta plans to put the cable up to 23,000 feet deep and to bury it with advanced techniques in important places.
