Australia has now marked an important milestone in medical innovation with the successful implant of the titanium heart. A man who received a titanium heart in a six-hour surgery last November has become the first patient to walk out free with the titanium heart in his body.
The titanium heart replaced his biological heart. It is rechargeable. The heart runs on a battery that only works for four hours on a charge and alerts the user when it is running low. The charger is a plug coming out of the man’s chest. They are working on a wireless way to charge it in the future, like MagSafe.
The heart weighs 1.42 lbs and is small enough to fit inside a 12-year-old child.
People with titanium hearts can’t feel it in their bodies.
Although having a heart that needs constant charging must be difficult, at least he’s alive.
