After waves of leaks about the console, from its design to what specs it’ll have, Nintendo have finally come out and released a teaser video of the console. But, while we saw the outside of the Switch 2, we don’t know what kind of processor it’ll have, or many other specifications. Unless, or course, you believe the leaks, which may be a good idea given how reliable they’ve been so far.
First up, hardware. The Switch 2 is larger than its predecessor, the Switch, with a larger screen, thinner bezels (the area around the screen), and larger Joy-Cons. As well as being larger, the Switch 2 also has two USB-C ports, with one on the top and one on the bottom, meaning it could possibly use one of them to connect to a display. The Joy-Cons have also been improved, now being magnetic, and having a new ‘C’ button, on the right controller.
Next, software. This’ll be much shorter, since we don’t know too much about the software of the Switch 2, aside from some leaks and what they directly showed us in the teaser. But, we do know that the Switch 2 will launch alongside a new Mario Kart game, something a lot of people have been waiting for, since the last game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released in 2017, and even that was only an improved version of a Wii U game.
Now, onto the rumors. First, the Switch 2 is rumored to be much, much more powerful than its predecessor. For one, it’s supposed to have a semi-custom processor and 12GB of laptop-grade RAM. For another, it seems as though to boost the power even more, it’ll use AI processes similar to what NVIDIA uses in their DLSS AI Upscaler to increase frame rates. Using these improvements, it’d be able to run more graphics-intensive games, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, another rumored launch title of the Switch 2. For the Joy-Cons, there have been leaks that point towards a “mouse mode” for them, where you could use one of them like a computer mouse, and maybe even play games with it.
All in all, the Switch 2 seems to be a massive boost in performance and in usability, and even with these improvements Nintendo has still made sure that it’s backwards-compatible with the original Switch, so you don’t have to buy new games for the Switch 2. But, that may come at the cost of, well, cost. It’s been leaked that it may be much more expensive, possibly $449 USD, so there have been some corners cut to achieve this level of good.
