Airships have been used for transport in what seems like an age ago, but new solutions could make it so that it is cheaper, and actually a viable option. The thing that makes airships float is lifting gas that is lighter than air, sadly this gas costs up to 35$ to lift even a single kilogram. This wouldn’t be a problem if it didn’t have to be released whenever the airship had to descend. The solutions that companies are contemplating involve taking on and releasing water to go up and down, and also compressing the lifting gas and adding additional weight with outside air. The first company, Flying Whales has designed a model called the LCA60T, which nearly measures 200 meters in length, and is designed to transport things like rocket sections or windmill blades across other terrain. The competition, Aeros is in Los Angeles, and they use the second method, using a compression systems to draw in air. In the future, when you see an airship fly by your window, you may not be too surprised.
