Invisalign and braces are both orthodontic equipment that you put in your mouth to fix your teeth or jaw. The best treatment depends on what you need or what your orthodontist prefers. The best option is different for everyone but here are a few positives and negatives for each.
Invisalign
Invisalign can be taken out at any time so it’s easier to eat and less food will get stuck in your teeth. Also you can floss or brush your teeth easier because you can take the Invisalign out so you can brush with it not on so it will be easier. With Invisalign, the work of the orthodontist happens before you get your aligners. A 3D scan of your teeth is used for making all the retainers. You should change the multiple sets of retainers on your orthodontist’s directions. You don’t have to visit the orthodontics for adjustments so you don’t have to go as much. You’re probably wondering whether braces or Invisalign are more comfortable and moving teeth around with Invisalign and braces is painful. However, because Invisalign is fitted to your mouth you will have less tooth and gum problems.
There are several disadvantages of invisalign. Being able to remove your aligners is both a pro and a con. If you aren’t someone who is disciplined about putting your aligners back in your mouth after eating or brushing, you aren’t going to wear them the required 22 hours per day. Your treatment may not produce the best results if the aligners aren’t worn as long. The major reason for Invisalign treatment failing primarily relates to lack of patient compliance with wearing the aligners. Aligners need to be removed before eating and drinking anything other than water.
Braces
With braces it doesn’t matter how difficult your case is. You may have multiple dental and facial issues that need correcting – braces can be used to fix each one so you finish treatment with an incredible smile. They are the most powerful treatment method in moving teeth into a desired position. Braces can achieve a more perfect look than Invisalign since they force the teeth into a position. Braces also have multiple different types for different people and problems. Lastly braces often take much less time than Invisalign to finish fixing your teeth and it fails less often since you can’t take them off.
Of course, there are some drawbacks associated with braces. Some people don’t like the look of traditional braces. They are worried they will feel self conscious about their appearance in some social settings. Brushing and flossing your teeth is a little more difficult with braces. If you don’t clean your teeth properly, you risk having plaque build up around the braces which can lead to staining and decay. Patients need to follow the instructions of their orthodontist on how to correctly brush and floss while your braces are on. Hard and sticky foods can cause the arch wire to break or a bracket to dislodge from a tooth.
