What is American football?
American football is a sport that many Americans like. They also host one of the most exciting events in sports history, the Superbowl. This is like the final football game, played by the best teams on the field. Football was first played on November 6, 1869, when Rutger and Princeton played against each other. The game was the very first college football game and led to the big success of modern football today.
Old footballs
The first football used an inflated pig bladder instead of the modern cowhide leather and a synthetic rubber bladder. They used pig bladders because, at that time, rubber wasn’t invented. They also used it because they were primarily round and lightweight. They changed it to an oval shape because the ball inflated too much in a game, so it had to stop the game several times to reinflate it. They also had to change it because the inflated pig bladder was hard to reinflate so that the ball would look different each time.
Modern football
Modern football uses cowhide leather instead of inflated pig bladders. Like the old football, it is shaped like an oval. Unlike the old football, it has laces on top of the ball. The laces help footballers throw the ball farther and with more accuracy. The football also has four panels shaped like leaves sewn together. On the inside, they use latex rubber, which enables the ball to be pressurized.
