A Chinese company has achieved a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector by installing what it claims to be the world’s largest onshore wind turbine. Sany Group, a renowned multinational firm specializing in heavy equipment manufacturing, proudly announced the successful installation of a groundbreaking 15-MW wind turbine in Tongyu, Jilin Province, China. This monumental feat marks a significant advancement in onshore wind energy technology.
The 15-MW wind turbine, which was installed on October 8, 2024, represents a remarkable prototype that will undergo rigorous testing over the next year to validate its reliability. Sany Group emphasized that this model, known as SI-270150, stands out as the largest onshore turbine in terms of single-unit capacity. Additionally, it boasts the largest rotor diameter of any onshore turbine installed globally, measuring an impressive 270 meters (885 feet)
With a design life of 25 to 30 years, this colossal turbine features a 131-meter-long (429 feet) blade and incorporates innovative design elements such as lightweight construction and intelligent load reduction technologies. Sany Group has implemented a dual tapered roller bearing (TRB) integrated main shaft support system in the turbine’s drive-train to ensure high load-bearing capacity and stability.
The manufacturing process for the 131-meter-long blade took place at the Bayannur Intelligent Industrial Park in China. Sany officials highlighted the technological advancements employed in the production of the blade, including self-designed fiberglass pre-quilting technology, long-distance automatic infusion technology, and three-dimensional design technology for trailing edge blind bonding insert. These cutting-edge techniques represent a shift from traditional manual manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing, enhancing production efficiency and sustainability.
This remarkable achievement further cements China’s position as a global leader in renewable energy innovation. Chinese companies have already made significant strides in offshore wind technology, deploying the world’s largest offshore wind turbines and floating offshore wind platforms. The installation of the world’s largest onshore wind turbine underscores China’s commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and reducing its carbon footprint.
As the global community continues to prioritize sustainable energy sources, the successful installation of the 15-MW onshore wind turbine by Sany Group represents a pivotal moment in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future.
