There are many weird planes from aviation history. While most airplanes follow a basic template, these airplanes break every aerodynamics rule. Some work and some don’t. Some examples of these weird planes include the Spruce Goose, the Super Guppy, the Dreamlifter, and the Edgley Optica.
The Spruce Goose
Known as one of the more famous absurd aircraft, the Spruce Goose (also known as the Hughes H-4 Hercules) is a big wooden cargo plane that carried troops and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean for WW2 purposes. It has a length of 66.65 meters and remains the largest wooden aircraft. It was built with wood because of the shortage of metals during the war.
The Supper Guppy
The Supper Guppy is a genuinely bizarre and gigantic aircraft. NASA used it to transport whole rocket parts. It was made from a retired Boeing Stratofreighter. It still stands as the only aircraft capable of carrying the third stage of a Saturn V rocket. It has a length of 43.84 meters, a wingspan of 47.63 meters, and a height of 14.78 meters.
The Dreamlifter
This airplane was designed to support Boeing’s Dreamliner program and is made to transport Boeing 787 Dreamliner parts. The aircraft is a gigantic modified Boeing 747. It was also used to deliver vaccines and medicines during the Covid pandemic. The Dreamlifter has a wingspan of 64.44 meters, a height of 21.54 meters, and a length of 71.68 meters. Only four planes were built in total.
The Edgley Optica
The Edgley Optica was designed mainly by John Edgley as an observational aircraft similar to helicopters. The plane has a 270-degree panoramic view and is lightweight and efficient. Its wingspan is only 12 meters, and its length is only 8.25 meters. The bulging cockpit in front of the engine gives it a dragonfly look.
